Family Reunification
Plain English
It's the legal process for bringing close family to live with you in Italy once you're already settled here. We're talking spouse, minor children, and in some cases dependent parents. You start by applying for a family nulla osta at the Sportello Unico in the Prefettura.
Why it matters
It's the main legal route to keep a family together when you couldn't all move at the same time. To qualify, you need a valid permit, proof you earn enough, and a housing-suitability certificate from your comune.
Real example
"A year into his new job in Bergamo, Hassan applied for ricongiungimento familiare. Once the nulla osta came through, his wife and two kids got family visas at the Italian consulate in Casablanca and joined him a few weeks later."
Common confusion
People underestimate the income and housing bar. You need to show a minimum yearly income (roughly the social allowance level, scaling up with each extra family member) and an idoneità abitativa certificate proving your flat is big enough.
