It's the umbrella term for refugee status and subsidiary protection in Italy and across the EU. Both are forms of international protection granted to people fleeing persecution or serious harm.
Why it matters
If you\'re seeking asylum in Italy, your formal claim is for international protection. The Commissione Territoriale then decides which form (if any) you\'re entitled to.
Common confusion
Special protection and humanitarian protection are separate from international protection. Even though they\'re all protection statuses, the legal grounds and rights aren\'t identical.
