Citizenship by Marriage
Plain English
It's the route to Italian citizenship for spouses of Italian citizens. Generally you can apply after 2 years of marriage if you\'re a resident in Italy, or 3 if you live abroad. Each gets halved if you have children together.
Why it matters
It\'s usually faster than naturalisation by residence. Requirements include a clean criminal record, no separations or annulments before the decree, and proof of B1 Italian.
Real example
"After 2 years of marriage and living in Caserta, Hugo applied for cittadinanza per matrimonio online. He attached his B1 certificate, criminal records from Italy and France, and the registered marriage certificate."
Common confusion
If you separate before the citizenship is granted, the application can be refused. The bond has to be intact through the whole process, not just at filing.
