It's the route to Italian citizenship for non-EU adults who have legally lived in Italy for 10 continuous years (4 years for EU citizens, 5 for refugees and stateless people). You apply online, then your file goes through the Prefettura and the Ministry of the Interior.
Italian citizenship gives you an EU passport, the right to vote, and protection against losing your status. It also exempts you from permit renewals forever.
"After 11 years of permits, taxes, and a clean record in Florence, Olamide filed her citizenship application. She passed her B1 Italian exam, attached every payslip and tax return she had, and waited about two and a half years for the final decree."
Continuous residence really means continuous. Long gaps abroad, periods without a valid permit, or unpaid taxes can each restart the 10-year clock or block the application outright.
