Emergency Room
Plain English
It's the emergency department of an Italian hospital. Care is universal: anyone in Italy, regardless of permit status, can be seen for emergencies. A triage nurse colour-codes urgency and queues you accordingly.
Why it matters
For genuine emergencies, pronto soccorso is the right place. For non-urgent issues, going there can mean very long waits because urgent cases jump ahead.
Real example
"When her toddler had a high fever that wouldn't come down in Asti, Sabriye took him to the pronto soccorso. The triage assigned a yellow code and a pediatrician saw them within the hour."
Common confusion
Lower-priority colour codes (green, white) often mean long waits and small co-payments. For routine illness, calling your GP or guardia medica is usually faster.
