Net
Plain English
It means "net." In salary talk, the netto is what you actually receive in your bank account, after IRPEF, INPS, and other deductions. The lordo is the gross figure above the line.
Why it matters
When you compare offers or plan a budget, the netto per month (sometimes called netto mensile) is the number that matters. Italians often talk in lordo, so always ask for both.
Real example
"During salary talks in Treviglio, Nilufar asked for the offer in both lordo and netto across 13 monthly payments, so she could plan her rent and savings."
Common confusion
Two people with the same lordo can have different netto depending on their detrazioni (kids, mortgage, etc.) and their regional/municipal surcharges. Personal calculators give better estimates than rules of thumb.
