Refugee Status
Plain English
It's the legal status under the 1951 Geneva Convention given to people fleeing persecution for reasons like race, religion, nationality, political opinion, or membership in a particular social group. In Italy it grants a 5-year residence permit and broad rights.
Why it matters
Refugee status is the strongest individual protection: access to work, healthcare, family reunification, and a faster path to citizenship compared with the standard 10-year route.
Common confusion
Refugee status is granted only after the Commissione Territoriale assesses the individual case. Just being from a country with conflict doesn\'t automatically qualify a person.
