Declaration of Presence
Plain English
It's a form a non-EU short-stay visitor fills in within 8 days of arriving in Italy, if they didn\'t already pass through a Schengen border control. Hotels file the equivalent for guests automatically.
Why it matters
It keeps your stay legal under the rules for short visits. Missing the declaration can cause problems if you\'re ever stopped or if you later try to apply for a long-stay permit.
Real example
"After flying into Italy from Tirana via a third country, Edona handed in her dichiarazione di presenza at the Questura of Imperia. The stamped copy went straight into her travel folder."
Common confusion
If you arrive on a flight from another Schengen country and don\'t go through Italian passport control, the dichiarazione is what proves your entry date. Without it, immigration may assume you\'ve overstayed.
