It's the residence permit for non-EU students enrolled in an Italian university or accredited program. It's tied to the academic year and can be renewed as long as the student stays enrolled and makes progress.
Most non-EU students need this permit within 8 days of arriving. It allows part-time work (up to 20 hours a week, around 1,040 a year) and access to the SSN through voluntary or mandatory enrolment.
"After her PhD started in Sondrio, Anh applied for her permesso di soggiorno per studio at the post office. She used the part-time work allowance to teach a few hours at a language school on the side."
If you stop your studies or fail to meet progress requirements, the permit may not be renewed. Some study permits can convert to work permits at graduation, subject to Decreto Flussi rules.
