Consulate
Plain English
It's a consular office of one country in another, focused on practical services for citizens and visa applicants. Italian consulates abroad issue visas, register Italians overseas through AIRE, and produce many official documents.
Why it matters
Before you ever land in Italy on a long-stay visa, the consulate in your jurisdiction is the office that issues it. After you arrive, your own country\'s consulate handles things like passport renewals.
Real example
"Before her elective residency visa interview, Whitney travelled from Charlotte to the Italian consulate in Miami with her financial documents and lease proof for her future flat in Lucca."
Common confusion
Some consular jurisdictions are huge. You usually have to apply at the one assigned to where you actually live, not just any consulate that\'s closer.
