EU Family Member Residence Card
Plain English
It's the residence card for non-EU family members (spouse, children, dependent parents) of an EU citizen living in Italy. It\'s issued by the Questura and gives the holder the right to live, work, and travel in Italy as long as the EU family link is valid.
Why it matters
It avoids the standard Decreto Flussi route for the spouse or children of an EU citizen. It also gives stronger rights than a typical family permit linked to a non-EU sponsor.
Real example
"After marrying a Spanish engineer based in Cuneo, Layla applied for the carta di soggiorno per familiare di cittadino UE. The Questura issued it for 5 years, much longer than a standard family permesso."
Common confusion
It only applies if your EU partner is actually exercising EU free-movement rights in Italy. If they\'re an Italian living in their own country with no cross-border element, the rules are different.
