Apostille

Apostille

It's a standardised certification stamp that makes a public document from one Hague Convention country valid in another, without needing further legalisation. For Italians, the Prefettura or Procura applies it. For foreign documents, the apostille is added in the country that issued them.

You\'ll need apostilled documents for things like family reunification, citizenship applications, marriage registration in Italy, or recognition of foreign degrees. Without it, a foreign birth certificate or marriage certificate is often refused.

"Before her wedding in Pordenone, Lana had to get her Albanian birth certificate apostilled in Tirana, then translated by a sworn translator in Italy. Only then did the comune accept it."

Not every country uses the apostille. If your country isn\'t in the Hague Convention, you need full consular legalisation instead, which takes longer.
