It's the renewal of an existing residence permit before it expires. You start the process at the post office with a new kit postale. Since 22 May 2026 the law says at least 90 days before expiry (it used to say 60).
Letting your permit expire creates a legal gap and can affect future renewals, the EU long-term permit, and citizenship. Filing on time keeps your continuity clean.

Even after a late submission, you may still be able to renew, but the gap creates risk. Don't bank on it. Mark the expiry date early in your calendar.
