Prefecture (Provincial Government Office)
Plain English
It's the provincial branch of the Ministry of the Interior, headed by a Prefetto appointed from Rome. It handles public order, civil rights matters, and the parts of immigration that aren't police work. Citizenship files go through here, and the work and family nulla osta are issued from inside the Prefettura too.
Why it matters
If you apply for Italian citizenship, your file lives at the Prefettura for most of the process. It's also where the Sportello Unico per l'Immigrazione sits, so any work or family entry route eventually touches this office.
Real example
"After ten years of legal residence, Aisha filed her citizenship application online. About two years in, the Prefettura di Torino called her in to verify her documents and check her Italian in person."
Common confusion
It's not a police station and it's not the town hall. It's a separate state-level office under the Ministero dell'Interno, sitting between your local comune and the national government.
