It's the formal refusal of a residence permit application or renewal by the Questura. The decision is written, explains the reasons, and includes information on how and when to appeal.
Why it matters
A diniego doesn\'t always mean it\'s over. Many decisions can be appealed to the administrative court (TAR) within tight deadlines, often with a chance to correct missing documents or arguments.

"After his renewal was refused due to missing income proof, Tariku in Crotone hired a lawyer to challenge the diniego at the TAR. They added the missing payslips to the file as part of the appeal."
Common confusion
Appeal deadlines are short, sometimes 60 days, and they start running from the formal notification. Sit on a diniego for too long and the chance to appeal disappears.
