Plain English
It's the act of registering with the national health service. You go to your local ASL with your permesso, codice fiscale, and proof of address, pick a GP, and walk out enrolled.
Why it matters
Without it, you can\'t access free or low-cost public healthcare or be assigned a medico di base. For work and family permit holders it\'s mandatory. For some other permits (study, elective residency) you can enrol by paying a yearly fee.
Real example
"On her second week in Iesi, Yara registered at the ASL with her permesso and lease. She walked out with a temporary medico assigned and her tessera sanitaria arrived a few weeks later."
Common confusion
If your permit is temporary, your SSN enrolment matches the permit\'s expiry. When you renew the permit, you\'ll usually need to refresh the SSN entry too.
