It's the monthly rent in a lease contract. The amount, payment date, and adjustment rule are spelled out in the registered contract at the Agenzia delle Entrate.
Why it matters
Once signed and registered, both you and the landlord are bound by the rent and rules in the contract. Side agreements in cash on top of the official rent are illegal and can wreck your tenant protections.
Real example
"In Empoli, Tobias' lease set the canone at 650 euros a month with annual ISTAT updates. The contract was registered with cedolare secca, and he paid by bank transfer every month for traceability."
Common confusion
Always pay by traceable method like bank transfer. Cash payments don\'t prove the rent was paid, and many tax bonuses for tenants require traceability.
